A Windsor garage owner said he’s struggling to keep his head above water after a burglar stole a car and escaped by crashing through a service bay door early Tuesday morning.
Peter Selley, owner of MacDonald’s Automotive Supercentre in the 500 block of Eugenie Street East, was called to his shop by Windsor police around 6:30 a.m.
He arrived to discover the culprit had pried open a staff entrance door and stole four sets of keys, including the keys to a 2006 Dodge Charger in the garage. The intruder stole the Charger, which he used to make his getaway by driving the through the framed-glass, retractable garage door.
“It was just like a movie in Hollywood, like Fast and Furious or Grand Theft Auto,” Selley said.
No injuries were reported, and the matter remains under active investigation, according to a spokesperson for the Windsor Police Service.
Selley said he will have to pay around $10,000 out of pocket to fix the damage before he finds out if his insurance will cover it. The provincial government had just loosened restrictions, allowing auto garages like Selley’s to open back up recently — making the timing of the crime even worse for him.
“We’re closed for three weeks and then we’ve had to take government loans to try and stay afloat and pay our employees,” said Selley.
“It’s just one thing after the next, and it’s hard to keep your head above the water. It’s frustrating.”
