HALIFAX—A man coming to the aid of a neighbour in Nova Scotia was punched and beaten with a pipe, police say.
On Monday afternoon in the community of Bible Hill near Truro, N.S., the RCMP say an argument broke out between two people on a driveway on Pictou Road.
Soon after, police say three more men showed up, one of whom had a pipe with him.
“The man who lived at the home said he didn’t want any trouble and ran into a garage,” a police statement said on Wednesday. “The man with the pipe smashed the glass in the garage door.”
A 69-year-old man who lives in the area heard what was going on and told the four people to leave.
That’s when the neighbour ended up being assaulted, police say.
“Two of them held him while the other two men beat him with their fists and the pipe. He fell to the ground and was knocked unconscious,” the police statement went on to say.
Another woman watching what happened called 911 and workers at a nearby property came to the victim’s aid and the attackers took off in two vehicles.
Police located the two cars shortly after and all four men were arrested.
The 69-year-old victim was taken to hospital by paramedics and treated and released with minor injuries.
In an interview, RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Jennifer Clarke said it’s not a “black and white situation” when deciding whether to intervene in disputes like this, but noted it’s understandable why good people want to help.
